Enhanced Energy Transfer from ZnO Host to Eu3+ by Mg2+ Doping

摘要Mg2+ and Eu3+ co-doped ZnO (ZMEO) with novel flower-like morphology has been prepared by an environmentally friendly method. The effect of Mg2+ co-doping on the Eu3+ emission has been investigated in detail. It is interestingly noted that the emission of ZMEO demonstrates a blue shift of band edge emission and a dramatic sharp red luminescence originating from intra-4f shell transition of D-5(0)-F-7(2) and D-5(0)-F-7(0) when excited with 325 nm wavelength at room temperature. Further studies show that defect complexes, i.e., oxygen vacancies and surface defects caused by Mg doping, serve as the energy storage centers to mediate the energy transfer from the ZnO host to the Eu3+ ion, which can strongly enhance the Eu3+ emission. This study suggests that impurity engineering is an effective way to enhance the Eu3+ emission intensity, which could prompt future applications of rare-earth doped ZnO nanomaterials in advanced display and lighting application.
